Cardiff Screening Test

The Cardiff Screening Test has been produced in response to requests for a cost-effective alternative to the Cardiff 4740R Standard Acuity Test, which can be used for screening purposes. The Screening Test can be used to gauge visual acuity in toddlers and young children, as well as older children and adults with verbal or intellectual impairment.

About the Cardiff Screening Test

The Cardiff Screening Test, like the Cardiff Standard Visual Acuity Test, consists of a set of grey cards with faintly-printed images. The cards are shown to the test patient one by one, and the examiner observes the eye movements of the patient when shown each card to determine whether they are looking at the image on the card or the blank space around it. When the patient can no longer detect the images on the cards, the examiner knows that they have reached the limit of that particular patient’s range of vision.

The cards are individually graded, enabling the examiner to easily quantify the visual acuity of the patient based on the images that they can and cannot see. This provides a LogMar measurement of the patient’s visual acuity.

Features and Benefits of the Cardiff Screening Test

  • A cost-effective alternative to the Cardiff 4740R Standard Acuity Test
  • For testing children ages 12 months to three years old
  • Intended for screening purposes rather than diagnostics
  • Consists of 30 testing cards in a useful carry case

Application of the Cardiff Screening Test

While the Cardiff Screening Test can be used in a number of settings to gauge the visual acuity of young children and older individuals with verbal and/or mental impairment, it is not recommended as a means for clinical assessment, as it does not provide the precise measurements that are required for an accurate diagnosis. If an acuity testing kit is required for clinical use or to monitor visual acuity over time, then one or more of the tests in the Cardiff Acuity Test range should be employed instead.

Other tests in the Cardiff range include:

  • Cardiff 4740R Standard Acuity Test
  • Cardiff Acuity Test For Low Vision
  • City-Cardiff Visual Acuity Flip Test
  • Cardiff 5667R Combined Contrast Test
