Cardiff 4740R Standard Acuity Test

The Cardiff 4740R Standard Acuity Test has been designed specifically to evaluate the visual acuity of children in the difficult-to-test age group of six months to three years. The test uses familiar pictures and is presented as a game in order to attract and retain the attention of the patient. Due to its simple nature and the use of observation techniques rather than direct communication to carry out the evaluation, this testing method can also be used to assess visual acuity in older children and adults with intellectual difficulties.

Preferential Looking Technique

The Cardiff 4740R Test makes use of a set of graded test cards with vanishing optotypes. Helpfully, the Cardiff Acuity Test doesn’t require the patient to be able to name or even to recognise the optotypes on the test cards in order for the test to be completed. Instead, the Cardiff Acuity Test relies on the technique of Preferential Looking, where the examiner simply notes the patient’s eye movements when shown a card in order to determine whether he or she can see the image. This means that the Cardiff Acuity Test can be used irrespective of the patient’s developmental stage, making it ideal for testing toddlers and preschoolers, as well as older children and adults with intellectual difficulties.
