Cardiff Reduced Acuity Test

The Cardiff Reduced Acuity Test is a cost-effective subset version of the Cardiff 4740R Standard Acuity Test, ideal for clinical settings where most of the patients are infants or toddlers, and a full set of Cardiff Acuity Test cards is therefore not required. This test consists of 30 cards – opposed to the 38 included in the standard Cardiff Acuity Test – and covers an optotype acuity range of 20/16 to 20/1900.

Features and Benefits of the Reduced Acuity Test

  • A cost-effective alternative to the Cardiff 4740R Standard Acuity Test

  • Covers an optotype acuity range of 20/16 to 20/1900
  • Testing can be completed in 3 – 5 minutes

About the Cardiff Acuity Test

The Cariff Acuity Test has been developed by Cardiff University as a rapid and effective method for testing visual acuity in children in the hard-to-test age range of 12 months to three years of age. An experienced examiner will be able to conduct a full test in just 3 – 5 minutes, and accurately quantify the visual acuity of the child.

The Cardiff acuity tests make use of a set of graded and ordered grey cards with printed images – called vanishing optotypes – which appear to vanish when they exceed the limit of the patient’s range of vision. The Cardiff Acuity Tests rely upon an examination technique called Preferential Looking, where the examiner shows the optotypes to the patient and observes their eye movements to determine whether the child can see the image or not. The cards are graded for the different acuity levels, and as a result, when the patient no longer registers the images – because they can no longer see them – the examiner can assume that the child’s visual acuity threshold has been reached.

About the Cardiff Reduced Acuity Test

While the Cardiff 4740R Standard Acuity Test consists of 36 cards and covers an optotype acuity range of 20/320 to 20/12.5, the Cardiff Reduced Acuity Test consists of 30 cards and covers an optotype acuity range of 20/16 to 20/1900. This reduced card set is appropriate for testing children ranging in age from 12 months to three years.
