What is the Aspherical Optical System?

The purpose of the Aspherical Optical System (AOS) is to eliminate corneal and iris reflexes in order to provide large, crisp and glare-free fundus images. The numbers below correspond with the numbers in the image and demonstrate how the AOS works.

1. A flat, elliptical beam is produced by HEINE’s Aspherical Optical System.
2. The beam is passed from the ophthalmoscope to the cornea.
3. The beam redirects iris and corneal reflexes.
4. The elliptical light beam enters through the lower half of the cornea, and separates into the illumination beam and the observation beam. Reflexes are diverted away from the observation beam due to the curvature of the reflective cornea. Due to the flat compressed form of the light beam, a maximum amount of light enters through the pupil.
5. Once past the anterior chamber, the light beam illuminates a large area of the retina.
